Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay is scheduled to return to training in two weeks after undergoing a successful heart surgery in Manchester. The 29-year-old Scotland international was diagnosed with a mild benign arrhythmia, an irregular heart rhythm considered non-serious.
The ablation procedure, which uses heat or cold energy to create small scars in the heart and restore a typical rhythm, took place on Tuesday at Spire Manchester Hospital. A statement from Napoli confirmed the operation was a complete success and that McTominay will rest for two weeks before resuming training.
McTominay moved to the Italian club from Manchester United in 2024. He had featured in Napoli's first two games of the current season. His absence means he will miss the club's Champions League opener against Arsenal and the first four Nations League matches for Scotland under new manager Sebastien Pocognoli. Scotland is set to play two matches against Slovenia and one each against Switzerland and North Macedonia.
McTominay previously represented Scotland at the World Cup, playing in all three of their group stage matches. Ahead of his surgery, McTominay stated that the procedure was planned with the club and that there was no cause for concern.
His fiancée, Cam Reading, posted a supportive message on social media, writing, "By your side, always so proud of you." The couple became engaged shortly after McTominay joined Napoli.
