Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni became overcome with emotion and left his post-match news conference in tears after his team's World Cup final defeat to Spain. Scaloni, who led Argentina to victory in the 2022 tournament, was asked about his future following Sunday's loss.

Scaloni's contract is set to expire in December. "I will talk to the president," he stated, his voice breaking. "I have an idea of what I would like to do. I will see out my contract and I feel the need, I don't know if something as big can be done. We need to speak this through."

He expressed gratitude for the opportunity and acknowledged the immense effort from his staff and players. "We have tried up until the very last minute to give our utmost, the staff and players," Scaloni said. "I believe it's only fair that I can take this time for myself to think this through."

Visibly emotional, he added, "bear with me, I don't know if I can continue." Scaloni described his position as "a dream place" that he and his staff never imagined reaching. However, he indicated that continuing in the role requires significant mental reset and the ability to rebuild a cohesive group, which he found difficult.

After a moment, he stood up, apologized, and left the room. "It's really painful, I am very sorry," he concluded before his departure.

Spain secured their victory with an extra-time strike from Ferran Torres, adding to their European championship title under manager Luis de la Fuente. Scaloni's emotional display highlighted the pressure and personal toll of managing a national team on the world stage.
