Sam Webb, a 28-year-old cornerback, has retired from the National Football League just three days after signing with the New York Giants. The team placed Webb on the reserve/retired list on Sunday, the day after he participated in the Giants' preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings.
Webb joined the Giants five days after being released by the Denver Broncos, ending a nine-day tenure with that team. He recorded two tackles in the Giants' 13-10 preseason loss to the Vikings at MetLife Stadium.
Last season, Webb appeared in seven games for the Cleveland Browns after being claimed off the Tennessee Titans' practice squad. His most notable play for the Browns was recovering a fumble and returning it for a 47-yard touchdown against the Cincinnati Bengals, which extended Cleveland's lead to 14-6 in their season finale.
A native of Excelsior Springs, Missouri, Webb played college football at Missouri Western, a Division II institution. He entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022. As a rookie, he played in all 17 games, accumulating 36 tackles, three passes defended, and one forced fumble.
Webb was waived by the Raiders near the end of training camp in 2023. He later joined the Raiders' practice squad before being signed by the Carolina Panthers off the practice squad in mid-September. After appearing in one game for the Panthers, he was released a month later and rejoined the Raiders' practice squad. He appeared in 11 games with the Raiders in 2024, primarily contributing on special teams while playing limited snaps on defense.
