Former Geelong player Sam Newman has stated that alleged drug use associated with Sydney Swans players is a common occurrence within the Australian Football League (AFL) and has called for an end to the current investigations.
Newman, speaking from Europe, suggested that the intense media coverage has amplified the situation surrounding the Sydney Swans incident. Victoria Police are currently investigating allegations stemming from an incident involving Swans players at a Melbourne hotel. No charges have been laid, and allegations remain unproven, with police not having publicly identified any offenders.
Both the Sydney Swans and the AFL are conducting their own inquiries into the alleged conduct, which reportedly includes drug use. Newman argued that the matter should be resolved swiftly to avoid further negative consequences for those involved.
"Think about what it is you are talking about, it's a pretty simple thing, happens all the time," Newman said, addressing the alleged conduct. "And don't think the Swans are the only people in the AFL to [allegedly] take drugs, you would be absolutely mistaken."
Newman did not offer evidence to support his assertion about the prevalence of drug use within the league. His comments have drawn mixed reactions from followers, with some supporting his call for procedural fairness and others criticizing his remarks as an attempt to deflect from the allegations.
The presumption of innocence applies to individuals under investigation, and police inquiries do not constitute a finding of guilt. Any disciplinary actions taken by the Sydney Swans or the AFL are separate from the ongoing criminal investigation and may pertain to breaches of club or league conduct rules.
Newman has previously commented on the Swans controversy from overseas. His latest intervention focused on the media's response and the duration of the resolution process. Victoria Police have continued their interviews as part of their investigation, with no criminal charges announced to date.
