Tennis star Aryna Sabalenka drew significant attention and criticism for her choice of attire during her US Open mixed doubles debut. The world No. 1 appeared on court in a black mesh dress by Nike, revealing an electric orange sports bra and matching briefs underneath. The outfit, which she has previously defended, prompted a wave of negative reactions on social media, with some fans describing it as "trashy."

Sabalenka, who is sponsored by Nike, participated in the mixed doubles event with Novak Djokovic, forming a highly anticipated partnership ahead of the Grand Slam's main draw. The power duo was expected to contend for the $1 million prize in the 16-team field.

However, their campaign ended abruptly in the first round after a shock defeat to Britain's Henry Patten and Czech partner Katerina Siniakova. The match concluded with Siniakova, the No. 1 ranked women's doubles player, serving an ace against Djokovic.

Despite the on-court result, the focus for many spectators remained on Sabalenka's ensemble. Social media users widely commented on the dress, with one user writing, "How about that - Sabalenka leading the parade of streetwalker chic at the US Open with fishnet over shorts and a sports bra." Another questioned, "Why does New York bring out all the trashy-ness?"

Sabalenka addressed criticism of similar outfits earlier in the month, stating her appreciation for creative and fun designs. "I really think, honestly, that recently they've been more creative and more fun, and we're definitely on to something really fun, especially for the next year," she said. "So I'm excited to partner with them to, you know, come up with some fun, fresh new designs, and I love my outfit. If someone doesn't like it, it's okay, you know, like you cannot impress everyone with your outfits, and that's why I like fashion."

Following their mixed doubles exit, both Sabalenka and Djokovic are set to focus on their respective singles campaigns, which commence on Sunday.
