Aryna Sabalenka, the two-time reigning US Open singles champion, has adjusted her on-court attire for the 2026 tournament following public criticism. Sabalenka, who began her 2026 campaign with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Camila Osorio on Monday, was previously noted for her choice of sheer Nike ensembles.

Her outfit for mixed doubles competition alongside Novak Djokovic featured a black mesh dress that exposed bright orange undergarments. This sparked a wave of online commentary, with some fans deeming the attire "trashy" and "risqué."

Sabalenka clarified that the designs were intentional, with sponsor Nike developing distinct outfits for day and night sessions at the US Open. "To be honest, I didn't know that I have a day dress," Sabalenka stated. "I thought I have a black dress with orange underneath. I figured [out] when I went to Nike that I actually have day session and night session, which is just like black and orange for the day."

She further explained that her grand slam outfits are often inspired by the host cities. For the US Open in New York, she cited basketball as an inspiration, calling it a "perfect fit."

The black outfit was designed by Nike for Sabalenka to wear during night matches

Sabalenka has reached the last three US Open finals, winning in 2024 and 2025. Despite her past success at the venue, her performance in recent events leading up to the US Open has raised questions about her No. 1 ranking. Elena Rybakina, currently ranked second, could surpass Sabalenka in the rankings if she reaches the semifinals, or even without winning matches if Sabalenka does not win the title.
