Rory McIlroy has acknowledged a shift in his enthusiasm for the PGA Tour and its associated tournaments, stating that other priorities have taken precedence.

"I think it just sort of ebbs and flows," McIlroy said following the British Open. "There’s been years where I’ve given [the PGA Tour] maybe more of my attention and years that I haven’t. Yeah, I guess I’m just at a stage that I have other things that I prioritize."

McIlroy, the world No. 2 golfer, indicated that changes to the PGA Tour schedule have contributed to his evolving perspective. Specifically, he pointed to the alteration in the Tour Championship format, which will shift in 2025 from a staggered stroke start to a standard 72-hole stroke-play event. This change, he noted, diminishes the significance of tournaments leading up to it, as the top 30 players qualify based on a points system.

"I just need to be in the top 30 going in there to have a chance to win a FedEx Cup," McIlroy explained. "So why would I care about the first two [tournaments]? I sort of came to that decision last year, and I’m just sort of doing the same thing."

This admission comes after McIlroy's performance at the British Open, where he finished tied for 40th place. He described feeling "stuck in neutral for most of the week."

McIlroy, who secured a career grand slam with his win at the 2026 Masters, suggested that a reduced schedule helps maintain his enthusiasm for the sport. "I’m nearly 20 years into this, and I need to do everything I can to keep my enthusiasm as high as possible, and playing a lighter schedule definitely does that," he said after the Scottish Open.

A lighter schedule also allows him to spend more time with his family, including his wife Erica and daughter Poppy. Following the British Open, McIlroy plans to take several weeks off until the Tour Championship in late August. He intends to use this break to celebrate his Masters victory and enjoy summer holidays with his family.

"Poppy’s got another four weeks off school until she goes back, so I’m just going to enjoy the summer holidays with her and Erica," McIlroy stated. "That’s what I’m looking forward to the most."
