Rory McIlroy, 37, has spoken about the difficulties of balancing his professional golf career with his family life, revealing he missed his daughter Poppy's first day of school this year. The world number two was preparing for the BMW Championship in St. Louis, which began on Thursday, when the milestone occurred.
McIlroy acknowledged the significance of the missed event, stating his efforts to spend more time with his wife, Erica Stoll, and their five-year-old daughter. "I would have loved to have been home for that, but I'm here, so it's just stuff like that, things I didn't have 10 years ago that I have these days," McIlroy told reporters. "I am in a different spot in my life."
He further explained that as he gets older, his priorities shift. "Life happens and things that you didn't have in your mid-20s you have in your mid-30s that you prioritize over golf, right," he said. "Prioritize things with your family or things that you don't want to miss. That's the stage of life where I'm at. Where, you know, not all my eggs are in the golf basket."
McIlroy indicated that while he still intends to compete, his approach to scheduling may vary. "It's a balance," he stated. "Some years I'll maybe play more, some years I'll maybe play where it's a little bit lighter. But it's just that balance of making sure that you play enough to stay sharp, but then also I guess having balance in your life that you feel like you're not missing out on other things that you want to do."
Despite these reflections, McIlroy confirmed he is scheduled to compete in five of the next six weeks, playing on both the PGA and DP World Tours, a schedule he noted is still more extensive than many top players.
This personal reflection comes after a period of reported marital challenges. In May 2024, divorce papers were filed by McIlroy, citing the marriage as "irretrievably broken" and outlining arrangements for shared custody of their then-three-year-old daughter. However, the couple later announced they had reconciled, with McIlroy describing the ordeal as a "wake-up call."
"There have been rumors about my personal life recently, which is unfortunate," McIlroy said at the time of their reconciliation. "Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realized that our best future was as a family together. Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning."
