Wayne Rooney, England's all-time leading goal scorer, has voiced significant doubts about the team's ability to win the World Cup, citing a concerning lack of cohesion and defensive vulnerability following their narrow 2-1 victory over DR Congo.

Thomas Tuchel's squad progressed to the round of 16 thanks to two late goals from captain Harry Kane, but Rooney described the performance as "far from their best" and "in big trouble" against stronger opposition.

"For me, there are big concerns," Rooney told the BBC. "We are all delighted England have gone through, but in particular when England lose the ball, they are so open. Against a better team, I think we are in big trouble if we don't sort that out."

Rooney pointed to a disconnect between the defense and midfield, issues with the full-backs, and what he perceived as "big gaps in the middle of the pitch." He emphasized that manager Thomas Tuchel "really needs to look at that otherwise we will go out."

Adding to his concerns, Rooney was critical of the right-back position, specifically mentioning Djed Spence's performance. He suggested that with Tino Livramento's injury, England should have recalled Kyle Walker before the tournament. "Kyle's still more than good enough and more than capable of playing in this England team," Rooney stated, adding that he worried this position "could really cost us."

Despite his criticisms, Rooney acknowledged Harry Kane's crucial role in securing the win. "His header was brilliant, but the second goal was incredible, and he is just such a top player," Rooney said of Kane, who has now scored 13 World Cup goals. "He is England's superstar, he is the hero for us."

Rooney concluded that while England secured the necessary progression, there are "few things that they need to clear up" regarding the midfield and defense from the DR Congo match.

England is set to face Mexico in Mexico City on Monday morning BST in the next round. The co-hosts have maintained a clean sheet and won all four of their previous matches in the tournament. A potential quarter-final match-up could see England face Brazil, followed by defending champions Argentina in the semi-finals.
