Australian athletics is mourning the sudden death of rising middle-distance runner Natasha Ward, who died on Thursday at the age of 21. NSW Athletics and the Sutherland District Athletics Club announced Ward's passing in a joint tribute.
A cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.
Ward was a celebrated middle-distance runner who medaled as a junior at NSW All Schools in the 1500m. She continued her success into her senior career, securing medals at UniSport Nationals in both the 1500m in 2023 and the 800m in April 2024.
Her track events primarily included the 400m, 800m, and 1500m. Ward also competed at the 2024 Australian Championships, sharing the track with notable Australian runners Morgan Mitchell and Claudia Hollingsworth.
Beyond her athletic achievements, Ward was recognized by her club as a valued member for her personality and support of fellow athletes. The tribute described her as "greatly loved" and noted that her "kindness and joy touched everyone fortunate enough to know her." Her "magnetic smile and warm personality" left a significant impact on Australian athletics, and her "enthusiasm and determination inspired her training partners."
Her death has prompted tributes from across the athletics community and beyond. Alicia DePasquale, who met Ward while shopping for running shoes with her son weeks prior, recalled her "beautiful presence," warmth, and kindness. Fellow Australian runner Nathan Breen expressed condolences to Ward's family and friends.
Ward's passing comes several weeks after Australian sprinter Jemma Stapleton, 25, died during a family holiday in Thailand. Stapleton, a finalist in the Stawell Gift, was reportedly riding a scooter when it slid and collided with oncoming traffic. Her brother described her as having a "heart of gold" and an "infectious smile."
