Reuben Ward has won a gold medal in gymnastics at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, fulfilling a lifelong aspiration. Ward's victory came after a strong performance across multiple apparatus, securing him the top spot on the podium.
Ward sat in seventh place after the floor exercise but surged into the lead with a stellar pommel horse routine, an event where he traditionally excels. He maintained his advantage through the rings, with team officials and media beginning to gather as the possibility of a gold medal emerged.
A slight adjustment to his vault run-up, which had impacted his performance in the team event, allowed Ward to execute it flawlessly this time with three twists. This performance propelled him to the top of the standings heading into the final two rotations.
His lead was sustained through the parallel bars, bolstered by a successful appeal from Team Scotland that added 0.100 to his score. Entering the final rotation on the horizontal bar, Ward held a 0.550-point lead, needing a solid performance to clinch the gold medal.
He delivered, sticking his landing to secure the victory. His coach, Jake Seager, was overcome with emotion as they embraced. "I like to imagine the best scenario possible and that was winning," Ward said after the event. "It kept me awake a little bit because I was picturing it and feeling the emotions. But this beat the expectations by a mile."
Ward expressed his elation, noting the disappointment of a prior event where he "fell short." "I'm just so overwhelmed, man. I can barely put words together," he stated. He is also a contender for medals in the floor, rings, and pommel events scheduled for Monday.
Looking ahead, Ward plans to celebrate with his teammates on Tuesday, following the conclusion of his competitions. "Tonight looks like eating hotel food and probably getting a pretty bad night's sleep," he commented. "Then I'll come in tomorrow, and try to relax and hit my routine. On Tuesday, after the competition, I'll celebrate big time with the team, with my boys. I love them so much and them coming to see me at the end when I was going around of the arena was special. I'm hoping we'll get to experience a bit of Glasgow."
