The Los Angeles Rams have released veteran cornerback Zech McPhearson with an injury settlement agreement, the team announced days before their season opener against the San Francisco 49ers. The agreement allows McPhearson to potentially sign with another team and be eligible to play this season.
McPhearson joined the Rams on August 10 as a potential depth player and contributor on special teams. After failing to make the Rams' 53-man roster last week, he was placed on injured reserve for an undisclosed reason.
McPhearson was originally a fourth-round pick out of Texas Tech by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2021 NFL Draft. He spent his first two seasons with the Eagles, primarily playing as a rotational slot cornerback and on special teams. He appeared in the Super Bowl during his second season in Philadelphia. His third year was cut short by an Achilles tear.
McPhearson has not played in an NFL regular-season game since his time with the Eagles. He spent the previous season on the Jacksonville Jaguars' practice squad. The Rams are scheduled to face the 49ers in Melbourne, Australia, for their Week 1 matchup.
