Hampshire Police have launched an investigation into an alleged assault involving Cardiff City midfielder Krystian Bielik and a young Portsmouth supporter. The incident occurred in the 70th minute of the Championship match at Fratton Park on Saturday, which Portsmouth won 2-0.
According to reports, Bielik, a former Arsenal academy player, reached out towards the fan's throat and pushed them after the supporter retrieved the ball and threw it away as Bielik attempted to collect it from the stands. The fan reportedly stood up and attempted to push Bielik in retaliation.
The supporter involved was ejected from the stadium following the altercation, while Bielik did not receive immediate punishment. Police confirmed on Sunday afternoon that they are investigating an incident where a teenage boy was reportedly the victim of a common assault.
Portsmouth Football Club acknowledged the incident, stating it is a "safeguarding matter" and is under investigation by both the club and the police. The club urged caution against speculation and emphasized the paramount importance of the welfare and safeguarding of young people.
Cardiff manager Brian Barry-Murphy stated post-match that Bielik "got slapped in the face" by the fan and commended the referee's handling of the situation, believing the officials diffused the incident correctly. He indicated that the FA would likely review the matter.
Portsmouth manager John Mousinho extended apologies to Cardiff and their players, acknowledging that the atmosphere at Fratton Park sometimes "tips over" and that such incidents should be avoided. Bielik, 28, had recently joined Cardiff and was making his fourth appearance for the club.
