Sebastien Pocognoli, formerly the head coach of Monaco, has been identified by the Scottish Football Association as their prime candidate to take over as Scotland manager. Pocognoli's potential appointment comes after Steve Clarke's departure from the role.

Following his dismissal from Monaco in early June, Pocognoli stated his intention to take time to prepare for his next opportunity with "calm and determination," emphasizing the lessons learned from his previous position. He concluded his tenure at Monaco, who finished seventh in Ligue 1 in his sole season after being recruited from Union Saint-Gilloise in October. It was at the Belgian club, which shares the Jamestown orbit with Hearts, that Pocognoli began to build his reputation.

After concluding a 17-year playing career as a left-back in the top divisions of England, Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium, he transitioned to coaching, working with young players at USG and with the Belgian national setup. His ascent to the senior team coaching position in 2024 saw him win the Belgian Super Cup almost immediately, followed by leading the club to their first league title since 1935 and participation in the Champions League.

Monaco's interest in Pocognoli was reportedly sparked by his assertive tactical approach. He is known to favor an attacking 3-4-1-2 formation, which he has described as "a dominant one, with and without the ball. High pressing, counter-pressing, but also real mastery in possession." Pocognoli views players as artists, stating, "And for an artist to put on a good show, they must be comfortable mentally and physically."
