Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Christopher Sanchez experienced a difficult outing Monday, surrendering a career-high nine runs in 3 ⅓ innings during a 15-1 loss to the Kansas City Royals. It was Sanchez’s worst statistical performance of his career, marked by a career-low one strikeout.
The outing significantly raised Sanchez's earned run average from 2.00 to 2.62. Sanchez stated that he could not identify a specific reason for the poor performance, telling reporters through an interpreter, “I mean, it’s just a game. As I learn from the good things that we have on the field, and the things when we perform well, the same thing when I don’t perform. I just try to learn from it.”
This performance stands in contrast to Sanchez's otherwise successful season. He was coming off a seven-inning shutout against the Pittsburgh Pirates on June 30 and had allowed five or more runs only twice prior to Monday’s game. Earlier in the season, Sanchez garnered attention for a streak of 50 ⅔ consecutive scoreless innings, the fifth-longest single-season streak since 1893.
However, from the outset of Monday's game, Sanchez struggled. The Royals scored six runs in the first inning, aided by a throwing error from shortstop Trea Turner and a three-run home run by Luke Maile. Royals catcher Salvador Perez also homered off Sanchez in the second inning. The Royals hit three home runs against Sanchez before he was removed in the fourth inning, and their offense continued to score throughout the game, contributing to what was described as their most complete offensive performance of the season.
Despite Sanchez's challenging start and the Phillies' lopsided loss, the team holds a wildcard position as the All-Star break approaches. The Phillies' record stands at 50-41, placing them 3 ½ games behind the first-place Atlanta Braves in the NL East.
