Former Premier League manager Pepe Mel, 63, is recovering in intensive care after suffering a stroke and undergoing surgery. Real Betis, one of Mel's former clubs, announced the news at the request of his family, stating that the operation was successful. Mel is now in intensive care at the Virgen del Rocio Hospital in Seville.
Mel managed West Bromwich Albion for a brief period, taking over in January 2014 when the team was four points above the relegation zone. During his 17 matches in charge, the Baggies secured three wins, six draws, and eight losses, ultimately finishing 17th in the Premier League and avoiding relegation by three points. Mel was dismissed 24 hours after the season concluded.
His tenure at West Brom also included navigating significant off-field events, such as the departure of striker Nicolas Anelka and a dressing room altercation between Saido Berahino and James Morrison.
Following his time in England, Mel returned to Real Betis for a second spell, leading them to promotion back to LaLiga for the second time. He had previously achieved promotion to Spain's second tier with Rayo Vallecano.
Several of Mel's former clubs have publicly expressed their support. Rayo Vallecano conveyed their best wishes for a swift and complete recovery, and LaLiga also shared a message of affection and support for the Spanish coach.
Mel, who has managed 16 different clubs throughout his career, was most recently in charge of Moroccan side IR Tanger before leaving earlier this year.
