Paulson Adebayo, the New York Giants' cornerback, is setting his sights on a resurgent 2027 season, aiming to solidify his position as a top-tier player and a cornerstone of the team's defense. Adebayo acknowledged that his performance last season was "not good enough," attributing it to an injury-marred campaign that saw him allow 48 catches for 579 yards and two touchdowns over 12 games.

"Regardless of whatever circumstance is going on," Adebayo stated, reflecting on his previous season. He expressed his ambition to ascend to the ranks of the NFL's best cornerbacks, a level he believes aligns with the three-year, $54 million contract he signed. "For sure, yeah. I think that’s what I see myself as, so that’s what I’m trying to prove."

This aspiration is not new for the 27-year-old. "Personally, my goal is always to be the best in the league, so year in and year out, that’s always been my goal since I came in as a rookie, so that doesn’t change," Adebayo said. He is working to meet external expectations as well.

During training camp, Adebayo has shown flashes of his potential, including an interception during a recent practice. This play offered an encouraging sign for the Giants, who are counting on Adebayo to recapture the form that led general manager Joe Schoen to believe in his potential as a No. 1 cornerback. With the Saints, Adebayo recorded 10 interceptions in 52 career games.

New defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson's scheme is expected to benefit Adebayo. Wilson's tendency to employ zone coverage, similar to schemes Adebayo utilized in New Orleans, involves significant press man coverage on the outside. "A lot of press man on the outside, letting the corners be able to get up and challenge the receivers," Adebayo explained. "So, I think that plays to our strengths — every one of our corners. I mean, it’s definitely something that I love to do."

Adebayo also addressed his absence from voluntary Organized Team Activities earlier in the offseason, describing it as dealing with "personal stuff" and stating there was "wasn’t too much to that."

Safety Tyler Nubin commented on Wilson's scheme, suggesting it will allow the Giants' cornerbacks to play with "super aggressive" tendencies. Adebayo echoed this sentiment, stating, "I feel like we’ve got one of the strongest cornerback rooms in the league. I think it’s going to be a really dominant defense."

The Giants' success hinges on at least one cornerback emerging as a lockdown player. Head coach Brian Daboll has expressed a desire for multiple top-tier corners, noting, "I’d like to have two No. 1 shutdown corners. Three would be even better. And your scheme has to help whoever is out there."
