New England Patriots running back TreVeyon Henderson has been ruled out of the team's season opener against the Seahawks due to an ankle injury, the team announced Tuesday. Henderson sustained the injury during an Aug. 24 practice and also missed the three preceding practices.
Backup center Ben Brown will also miss the game with a knee injury.
The absence of Henderson, a second-round pick from Ohio State, is expected to lead to an increased workload for Rhamondre Stevenson. Henderson finished his rookie season with 911 rushing yards and nine touchdowns, adding 221 receiving yards and another score. He was a finalist for the Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year award.
With Henderson sidelined, Corey Kiner is set to become the second running back on the depth chart. The team also has Lan Larison and Hassan Haskins on the practice squad who could be called upon.
"We’ll see where TreVeyon is today at practice," head coach Mike Vrabel said Saturday when discussing the running back situation. "Corey [Kiner], we talked about him when we traded for him that he was a player that we had looked at trying to get last year coming out. It didn’t work out. He’s a good young runner."
Vrabel added, "We’ve kept Lan [Larison] here, giving him an opportunity to be on the practice squad, and then Hassan’s [Haskins] on the practice squad as well. So, whatever we need, some guys have a little bit of different strengths than maybe the other guys. So, there’s a little bit of everything, and then we’ll see who we end up using for the game."
The Patriots are set to face the Seahawks in a rematch of Super Bowl 2026, where Seattle defeated New England. Quarterback Drake Maye will lead the offense, which will feature new receivers A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs.
