The San Diego Padres defeated the New York Yankees 3-2 on a walk-off, two-run home run by Luis Campusano in the bottom of the 10th inning Friday night at Petco Park. The decisive hit came against Yankees reliever Paul Blackburn.

Spencer Jones, a local product playing in his hometown, had put the Yankees ahead 2-1 with a leadoff single in the top of the 10th against Padres closer Mason Miller. However, Jones was later thrown out attempting to steal third base.

Blackburn had not allowed a run in his last 13 1/3 innings and had not surrendered a home run since July 29. Campusano’s blast on a first-pitch sinker ended both streaks.

Pitching Performances

The Yankees opened the scoring in the third inning when Ben Rice hit a 444-foot home run off Padres starter Walker Buehler. The Padres took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Ty France doubled and scored on a bloop single by Xander Bogaerts. The play also resulted in the exit of Yankees outfielder Trent Grisham due to a right hamstring injury.

Yankees starter Max Fried, in his second start since returning from the injured list, allowed one run on 72 pitches across 5 2/3 innings. He was followed by Will Warren, who pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings. David Bednar entered in the ninth inning and struck out Austin Hays to send the game to extras after the Padres had advanced a runner to third base on a double and a passed ball.

The Padres bullpen matched the Yankees’ efforts with scoreless relief from Adrian Morejon and Mason Miller, both of whom were previously linked to the Yankees in trade discussions before remaining with San Diego. Miller struck out two in the ninth, including Cody Bellinger on a 102 mph fastball.

With the loss, the Yankees (80-61) fell to four games behind the Tampa Bay Rays for the division lead with 21 games remaining. The Boston Red Sox also moved within 3 1/2 games of the Yankees for the top American League wild card spot.
