San Diego Padres starting pitcher Randy Vasquez fainted while being escorted to an X-ray room for evaluation of a right ankle injury after the team's July 2 game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was caught by a trainer before hitting the ground and was subsequently taken to a local hospital for precautionary tests.
Vasquez reportedly lost consciousness after being struck in the ankle by a comeback hit from Mookie Betts in the first inning of the game. Despite the incident, Vasquez remained in the game, pitching three innings and allowing four earned runs.
On the morning of July 3, Padres manager Craig Stammen provided a positive update on Vasquez's condition. "The only thing I got [on Vasquez] this morning was that he’s all-clear, and that they were heading back to the hotel," Stammen said, according to MLB Network Radio. "But glad Randy is doing well, and X-rays were negative, and all tests came back pretty clean. So we’re in good shape."
Vasquez, 27, is 6-6 with a 4.71 earned run average in 17 appearances this season. The Padres will be hoping he is healthy enough to make his next scheduled start.
