Northamptonshire Steelbacks have won their third T20 Blast title, overcoming Hampshire Hawks in a close final at Edgbaston. The Steelbacks secured victory by 14 runs after a match that went down to the wire.
Hampshire won the toss and elected to bowl first. The Steelbacks posted a total of 169 in 19.5 overs, anchored by opener Ricardo Vasconcelos's 88. Despite a significant collapse that saw them lose eight wickets for just 31 runs, Vasconcelos's innings provided the crucial foundation.
In response, Hampshire Hawks were restricted to 155 in 19.2 overs. Joe Weatherley scored 75 for Hampshire, but the Steelbacks' bowling attack, led by Ben Sanderson and James Sales, proved decisive. Sanderson took three crucial wickets, including the final two of the match, to seal the win.
The Hawks required 31 runs from the final 20 balls with five wickets in hand, a target that became 15 from the last six balls with only two wickets remaining. Weatherley, on 75, was caught by David Willey off Sanderson's bowling, and Sanderson took another wicket on the subsequent ball to end the contest.
Earlier in the innings, Vasconcelos and Nathan McSweeney forged a 60-run partnership, followed by a 69-run stand between Vasconcelos and Lewis McManus (22). However, the Steelbacks experienced a dramatic batting collapse after reaching 138-2. Vasconcelos's career-best 88 came off 59 balls, including 11 fours and two sixes. He fell to a slower ball from Sonny Baker, who went on to take 5-21, becoming the first bowler to achieve a five-wicket haul on Finals Day.
Hampshire's chase started poorly with Toby Albert out on the first ball. James Vince and Joe Weatherley attempted to rebuild, but Vince was dismissed for 17. Weatherley continued to score, surpassing Luke Wright's record for the most runs on a single Finals Day. Despite his efforts and a contribution from Liam Dawson (17), Hampshire struggled to maintain the required run rate. Dawson was run out attempting a leg-bye, and James Fuller (16) was later dismissed by Luke Procter. The final wickets fell quickly as Hampshire fell short.
James Sales finished with figures of 3-25, bringing his competition tally to 25 wickets. The Steelbacks' victory marks their third T20 Blast title.
