Lando Norris will start the Dutch Grand Prix from pole position after a strong performance at Zandvoort, signaling a potential resurgence for his McLaren team. The reigning world champion secured the top spot by one-tenth of a second ahead of compatriot George Russell, despite intermittent rain during qualifying.
This marks the second consecutive Grand Prix where Norris has started from pole, having also achieved this at Budapest three weeks prior, where he went on to win. These results suggest McLaren may be overcoming their earlier season struggles, attributed to recent upgrades.
For George Russell, the session provided a significant boost following the summer break. He not only qualified second, ahead of his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli, but also dominated the earlier sprint race, winning from pole position. While points from the sprint race are minimal, Russell's performance offered a psychological lift as he continues to contend for the world championship. He narrowed his deficit to Antonelli in the standings from 59 to 56 points.
Russell expressed relief and confidence in his adjusted driving style, which he likened to changing a golf swing. "The break allowed me to put my learning to the back of my mind, not fixating on what I want to achieve with the car, but still knowing what I need to do and driving more freely," Russell said. "I feel very confident going into the race."
Antonelli, the 19-year-old rising talent, acknowledged the competitive dynamic. "It was a very good wake-up call today," he admitted. "You can never lower your guard."
Norris, initially downbeat after finishing third in the sprint race, praised his team's turnaround. "A good turnaround from earlier today, where I felt we struggled," Norris stated. "Credit to the team, they did a good job. We had to try something because what we had before wasn’t going to be enough."
Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton qualified fifth, one spot behind Norris's McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri. Hamilton did not appear to be a contender for pole position during the session.
