San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa acknowledges he has minimal familiarity with Australia as he prepares for his team's upcoming historic NFL game in Melbourne. Bosa stated he has "almost zero information" about the country but has identified coffee as a priority.
"I heard they have good coffee so I’ll try and take advantage of that and have some good coffee," Bosa said before the 49ers departed for Melbourne. "I think there’s some nature exhibits to check out maybe."
Melbourne is known for its serious coffee culture, reportedly importing approximately 30 tons of coffee beans daily, enough for about 3 million cups. The city even boasts its own coffee creation, the "Magic," a double ristretto served with steamed milk in a small cup. The 49ers organization is engaging with this aspect of the city by partnering with six Melbourne businesses for a "Foodie Passport" that features player-inspired coffee.
For those interested in experiencing Australia's wildlife, Healesville Sanctuary offers encounters with native animals such as koalas, kangaroos, and wombats in a natural setting.
Bosa, who is working his way back from a torn ACL, will have opportunities to explore these aspects of Melbourne before the 49ers face the Rams in the NFL's inaugural game in Australia. The city is also currently in the midst of its Australian Football League (AFL) playoffs. Geelong and Carlton are scheduled to play an elimination final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the same venue where the 49ers and Rams will compete in the NFL game just days later. This could offer Bosa a glimpse into the sport of "footy" and the stadium he will soon play in.
Following a transpacific flight and significant time zone adjustments, Bosa indicated that the "Magic" coffee might transition from a tourist recommendation to a necessity.
