Manchester City has secured the signing of England international Niamh Charles from Women's Super League rivals Chelsea for a reported fee of £500,000. The 27-year-old left-back has agreed to a three-year contract with City after six seasons at Stamford Bridge.

Charles brings significant experience to Manchester City, having made 173 appearances for Chelsea. During her time with the club, she won five Women's Super League titles, four FA Cups, and three League Cups. She was also part of the Chelsea squad that reached the Women's Champions League final in 2021.

"I'm really happy to be here and I can't wait to get started," Charles stated. "I've seen from the outside and have obviously played against City over the past few years, and they had great success this year. What they're building as a team is something I wanted to be a part of. It's the perfect fit and hopefully we can have some good times together."

Her move to Manchester City occurs as Katie McCabe, a Republic of Ireland international, joins Chelsea from Arsenal. Charles's departure coincides with this transition for Chelsea.

Charles is expected to provide valuable experience in both the WSL and Women's Champions League for Manchester City. The England defender also aims to secure regular game time to solidify her position in Sarina Wiegman's squad for the upcoming World Cup. She has earned 34 caps for the Lionesses and scored a penalty in the shootout victory against Spain in the Euro 2025 final.

At Manchester City, Charles will occupy the number 21 shirt, replacing Spain international Leila Ouahabi, who has moved to Chicago Stars FC. City, who clinched their first WSL title in a decade in May, are strengthening their squad depth as they prepare to compete in European competitions. The club has also recently signed England forward Beth Mead, who left Arsenal, and secured a new four-year deal for top scorer Khadija Shaw.

Therese Sjogran, Manchester City's director of football, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition. "To add a player of Niamh's ability and experience to our squad after the success of last season is a huge positive," Sjogran said. "We're all excited to see what she can bring and despite everything she's already achieved in the game, we firmly believe her best years are still to come. She has the drive to become a better player every day and also challenge her team-mates to do the same."
