The National Football League's historic debut in Australia faced criticism from fans regarding the viewing experience at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) for the matchup between the Los Angeles Rams and the San Francisco 49ers. Videos circulated online showing fans in what were advertised as front-row seats with a significantly distant view of the football field.

The large oval shape of the MCG, a venue typically used for cricket and Australian rules football, created a wide expanse of unused turf between the sidelines and spectators. An NFL field measures approximately 120 yards long and slightly more than 53 yards wide. When centered within the MCG's dimensions, this created a considerable buffer zone. One fan's video, amplified by MLFootball, revealed a view where the field appeared to be about 50 yards away from the first row.

Beyond the distance, other fans reported issues with obstructed views due to crowded NFL sidelines and protective netting for spectators behind the goalposts. Even temporary premium seating installed on the grass was said to offer difficult viewing angles. The NFL has not yet commented on the fan feedback.

The game itself drew immense interest, with approximately 100,000 spectators in attendance after tickets sold out rapidly. Nearly half of the ticket buyers reportedly traveled from outside Melbourne, with international visitors coming from over 35 countries, contributing to a vibrant atmosphere. However, the scale of the venue meant that for many, the experience was not as intimate as anticipated.

Some observers suggested that future NFL games in Australia might be better suited for rectangular venues, such as Stadium Australia in Sydney. Such a move, however, could potentially impact the large crowd capacity that characterized the historic debut. Ultimately, fans who secured first-row seats at the MCG received the literal first row of the stadium, not necessarily the first row of the football action.
