Newcastle United has reopened discussions with Bayern Munich regarding the transfer of midfielder Joao Palhinha.
The Portuguese international was initially a secondary target for Newcastle, who were also pursuing Pierre Emile Hojbjerg. During negotiations with Marseille for Hojbjerg, Aston Villa emerged as a contender to sign Palhinha on loan from Bayern Munich. However, both of these potential deals collapsed last week, leading Newcastle to re-engage with Bayern.
Bayern Munich has indicated they are unwilling to loan Palhinha, a stance that sporting director Max Eberl cited as the reason for their refusal to negotiate with Aston Villa. The 31-year-old midfielder is now evaluating other offers, including those from Benfica and Sporting. Head coach Matthias Jaissle of one of these clubs is reportedly seeking an experienced player to help mentor younger midfielders.
Palhinha spent the previous season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, but the London club decided not to make the move permanent. Bayern Munich acquired Palhinha for approximately £50 million in July 2024.
Separately, Newcastle United is reportedly in advanced negotiations to sign right-back Amar Dedic from Benfica.
