Newcastle United has initiated exploratory discussions with Manchester City regarding a potential transfer for midfielder Nico Gonzalez, according to reports. The 24-year-old is a primary target as Newcastle seeks to fill the void left by Bruno Guimaraes, whose departure to Arsenal for £75 million has been confirmed.
Newcastle aims to acquire an experienced midfielder capable of integrating into the squad before their Premier League opener against Liverpool. Gonzalez has expressed openness to a new challenge, having struggled to secure consistent starting opportunities since his £50 million move from Porto last summer.
Manchester City is also actively involved in the transfer market, with reported interest in Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille and Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea. The club has recently seen significant midfield departures, including Rodri's £65 million transfer to Barcelona and Tijjani Reijnders' £52 million move to Al Qadsiah. City is understood to be open to similar offers for Gonzalez.
While City has secured the signings of Elliot Anderson and intends to retain Mateo Kovacic, they are also seeking to enhance their midfield depth with additional quality acquisitions.
