Newcastle United is reportedly leading the race to sign Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi, a player who has rapidly ascended through the ranks and emerged as one of the World Cup's breakout stars. Manzambi's impressive performances have attracted attention from clubs across Europe.
Manzambi joined Freiburg from Swiss side Servette in 2023 and quickly made an impact, rising through the club's youth system. His dedication and drive to improve were evident early on. Former Freiburg II manager Benedetto Muzzicato noted Manzambi's relentless pursuit of improvement, stating, "He wants to improve every single day. If anything, you have to slow him down rather than motivate him."
Last season, Manzambi was a key player for Freiburg as they reached the Europa League final for the first time. He was subsequently named the competition's young player of the season, following in the footsteps of notable talents like Rayan Cherki and Florian Wirtz. Despite it being his first full campaign as a starter, he contributed 13 goal involvements, including notable long-range goals against Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga and Braga in the Europa League.
His skill set includes strong ball-carrying abilities, close control, and a knack for creating opportunities. Manzambi's versatility in the midfield has also been a significant asset, with his ability to play various roles in the center of the park.
Data from the 2025-26 Bundesliga season further supports his impact. Among midfielders, Manzambi ranked first in progressive carries of over 10 meters (116), carries into the shot-ending action (13), and fouls won (78). He was also second in total take-ons (71) and carries progressing into the opposition half (52), showcasing his ability to drive play forward.
While still developing, Manzambi possesses a "very healthy and positive drive" according to Muzzicato, who recalled recognizing his talent from his first touch. "His natural talent and understanding of the game were obvious from the start. You could see it immediately," Muzzicato said. "But, as a person, he is exactly the kind of player every coach wants in their team. He always wants to improve, asks the right questions and is eager to learn."
