San Antonio Spurs announcer Jacob Tobey has returned to his job after being fired in July amid allegations of cheating on his then-girlfriend with a player's sister. Tobey announced his return on social media Friday, expressing gratitude to the Spurs for allowing him time to address personal matters.
"I understand that I will have to regain trust within the organization and across our community, a community where I will continue to be present with enthusiasm and passion," Tobey posted. "I believe I have the best job in the world and am thrilled to be able to continue as the team's play-by-play announcer."
The scandal unfolded when Tobey's girlfriend made a series of explosive posts on his social media account in the middle of the night. One post reportedly read, "This is my girlfriend of six years. But I cheated on her so feel free to continue following me if you really think I'm a good guy because I'm not. :)" Another post included what appeared to be photos of Tobey and another individual kissing in a photo booth.
These posts were later deleted, and Tobey's accounts were made private. However, Tobey's ex-girlfriend later indicated on her own Instagram account that she was responsible for the posts and that their relationship had ended.
Tobey began calling Spurs games in 2024 and had established a strong reputation within the sports media industry. The previous year, he was recognized on Front Office Sports' list of rising young play-by-play broadcasters. Before joining the Spurs, he worked for 9News in Denver and covered games for Fox Sports and the Pac-12 Network.
The announcer's role with the Spurs is considered highly desirable, particularly given the team's recent performance, including their appearance in the NBA Finals where they were defeated 4-1 by the New York Knicks. The Spurs feature a promising young core of players, including star Victor Wembanyama.
