Washington Nationals outfielder Jacob Young executed a remarkable play Sunday, vaulting off the outfield wall in a move described as a "Spider-Man impression" to make one of the season's most impressive catches.
During the third inning of the Nationals' 6-2 loss to the Miami Marlins, Young tracked a deep fly ball hit by Marlins outfielder Heriberto Hernández. As the ball traveled to left-center field, Young approached the tall wall, timed his jump, and then propelled himself upward using the wall itself. He extended his glove to snare the ball at its highest point, just as it neared clearing the fence.
The catch also resulted in an inning-ending double play. Marlins runner Otto Lopez, who had started for first base, had advanced to third assuming the ball would be a home run. Young immediately threw the ball back to first base, where the runner had to return, completing the play.
Young, 27, has established himself as one of the league's top defensive center fielders since his arrival in late 2023. This season has also marked his most productive offensively, with a .244 batting average, 10 home runs, and 43 runs batted in. This offensive output represents a significant increase from the combined five home runs he hit in his first three seasons.
His speed is a key asset to the Nationals. While the team lost the game, Young's extraordinary catch is expected to be a memorable moment of the season.
