Natasha Ward, a promising Australian track-and-field athlete known for her middle-distance running, has died at the age of 21. The New South Wales Athletics and the Sutherland District Athletics Club announced her passing in a joint statement on Thursday.

A cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.

During her junior career, Ward earned medals in the 1500m at the NSW All Schools event. She continued her success into her senior career, securing a medal in the 1500m at the 2023 UniSport Nationals and claiming the bronze medal in the 800m at the UniSport National Championships this past April. Ward also competed at the 2024 Australian Championships and was an active participant in both summer and winter relays for her club.

Beyond her athletic accomplishments, Ward was described as a cherished member of the athletics community. The joint statement highlighted her kindness, joy, and the indelible mark left by her smile and warm personality, noting that her enthusiasm and determination served as an inspiration to her training partners.

One individual shared an anecdote about Ward, recalling a recent encounter at a Nike store where she provided expert advice on running shoes. The person emphasized Ward's kindness and unforgettable presence.

Ward was pursuing a degree in exercise and sports science at Sydney's Macquarie University. Her death follows that of fellow Australian sprinter Jemma Stapleton, who died at age 25 in a motorbike accident in Thailand.
