Paul Pogba's tenure at Monaco could be nearing an end after a debut season severely hampered by injuries, during which he played a total of only 115 minutes across six appearances. The French midfielder joined Monaco last June, his return to football following a reduction of his original four-year doping ban to 18 months.
Pogba, 33, signed a two-year contract with the club. However, his 2025-26 campaign was largely derailed by fitness issues, limiting him to a single start. This lack of playing time has also impacted his hopes of featuring in France's World Cup squad.
While Pogba's reported weekly wage at Monaco is significantly lower than his previous earnings at Manchester United, the club is reportedly considering his sale to reduce their wage bill, in line with regulations from the DNCG, French football's financial watchdog.
Monaco CEO Thiago Scuro acknowledged the complexity of the situation. "It is a complicated topic because we have a lot of respect for Paul, for the person he is," Scuro told Get French Football News. "Since he arrived, he has been very positive."
He added that the initial expectations for Pogba's project at Monaco differed significantly from the reality of the past season. "I think that we have to be fair with him, follow his preparation every week, how he will progress physically and technically and then it will be the manager's decision," Scuro stated. "We have the summer to see what level we will see from Pogba. He could [leave at the end of the summer]."
Scuro emphasized that the relationship with Pogba remains open and transparent. "If, at some point, the expectations of the player are different to the expectations of the club, we will have to speak to find a solution. The performance will give all the answers that we need. Maybe he will stay, maybe he will leave."
Pogba had described his move to Monaco as a "second chance" after a difficult period. In 2024, he spoke of going through "hell" and "a time of darkness" before his ban was reduced.
