Mixed martial arts fighter Cole Johnson, who goes by the name Wavy MMA, has publicly stated his belief that he could defeat a chimpanzee in a fight. Johnson, 24, who has one professional fight to his credit, claims that such a bout could be livestreamed.

Johnson made the announcement in a video last week, asserting, "I 100% wholeheartedly believe that I could beat a chimpanzee in a fight." He addressed common beliefs about chimpanzee strength, countering that while a chimp may be twice as strong as an average human, he also possesses comparable strength due to his lifelong experience in grappling and wrestling. Johnson, who fights out of City Kickboxing in New Zealand, characterized a chimpanzee as typically being four feet tall and weighing around 130 pounds. He added that he would counter any aggressive actions from the animal with his own fighting techniques.

In an interview, Johnson admitted that the initial video was partly a joke, but reiterated his conviction that he could win such a contest. He claims to have received an initial offer of $500,000 to proceed with the fight, which ultimately fell through. However, Johnson stated that a subsequent offer for more than $500,000 has materialized for a fight against a male chimpanzee that has reportedly injured people. According to Johnson, the fight would proceed without the animal's teeth or claws being altered, though tranquilizers would be available as a precaution. He described the potential event as a test of strength between man and chimp.

Johnson also suggested that a future fight against a polar bear, potentially armed with a sword, could follow if he wins against the chimpanzee. He indicated that the chimpanzee fight is slated for September 11 and could be broadcast via livestream.
