The Mid-American Conference (MAC) has formally appealed to the NCAA FBS Oversight Committee and the College Football Playoff, requesting that the result of the Michigan Wolverines' Week 1 victory over Western Michigan be overturned. The appeal centers on a disputed final play that allowed Michigan to secure a 47-41 win on a 47-yard Hail Mary pass as time expired.

According to a statement from MAC Commissioner Dr. Jon Steinbrecher, replay protocol was not properly followed in determining whether time remained on the game clock. The Big Ten Conference replay officials reportedly relied on a game clock embedded within their replay system, which was not synchronized with the clock shown to viewers and fans. This discrepancy led to an additional second being added to the clock, allowing for the final play.

"Had the protocol been properly followed and the program-feed clock been used, no additional play would have been awarded, and Western Michigan would have won the game, 12–7," the MAC statement read. The conference is requesting that the NCAA and playoff committee recognize Western Michigan as the game's victor for ranking and evaluation purposes.

The controversy ignited immediately after the game, with fans expressing outrage and claiming the result was fixed. The emergence of footage showing the clock discrepancy further fueled these claims.

Fox Sports rules analyst Mike Pereira discussed the situation, noting that replay officials were instructed to use television footage if a discrepancy arose, rather than internal feeds. He suggested that adherence to this protocol would have meant no additional play was granted. "When it's all said and done, that's what should have happened, and there shouldn't have been another play," Pereira stated.

Initially, Steinbrecher had accepted the game's outcome. However, after further review and the release of additional information regarding the clock synchronization issues, the MAC decided to pursue an appeal. The outcome of this appeal could significantly impact Michigan's playoff aspirations, especially as the team had already dropped out of the AP Top 25 rankings despite the win. Western Michigan had already batted down a pass as time seemingly expired

Western Michigan had appeared to secure an upset victory when their defense batted down a pass as time expired. However, officials intervened, adding a second back to the clock, which led to JJ Buchanan's game-winning Hail Mary for Michigan. JJ Buchanan caught a 47-yard Hail Mary to win the game as time expired for a second time

The Big Ten has been asked to provide clarification on the replay protocol and its application in this specific instance. The conference has acknowledged the situation and is cooperating with the review process. The appeal process will now move forward, with decisions pending from the NCAA and the College Football Playoff committee.
