Lionel Messi's wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, expressed her elation following Argentina's stunning comeback victory in the World Cup, a match that saw the team on the brink of elimination.
Argentina trailed Egypt 2-0 with just 12 minutes remaining in the second half of their last-16 match on Tuesday. However, the defending champions staged a remarkable comeback, scoring three goals in 13 minutes to secure a 3-2 win and advance to the quarterfinals. Messi was visibly emotional, bursting into tears after the final whistle.
Roccuzzo, along with their three sons – Thiago, Mateo, and Ciro – was in attendance in Atlanta to witness the dramatic match. Following the game, she posted a tribute to her husband on Instagram, writing, "Vamos Argentina. @leomessi ya no quedan palabras," which translates to "Let's go Argentina. @leomessi there are no words left."
She also shared photos of herself and their sons wearing matching Argentina home jerseys with Messi's iconic No. 10 on the back. Roccuzzo herself wore a jersey with her husband's surname.
Argentina's comeback began in the 79th minute when Sergio Romero headed home. Messi equalized in the 83rd minute with a shot that hit the underside of the crossbar. The decisive goal came in the second minute of second-half stoppage time from a header by Enzo Fernandez.
Earlier in the match, Egypt had taken the lead in the 15th minute with a header from Yasser Ibrahim. Messi had an opportunity to equalize from the penalty spot, but his shot was saved by Egypt's goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir. Egypt extended their lead midway through the second half with a goal from Mostafa Zico, following a disallowed goal after a VAR review.
Messi and Argentina are now set to face either Switzerland or Colombia in the quarterfinals on Saturday night.
Roccuzzo, who married Messi in 2017, has also established herself as a businesswoman and influencer. She has interests in a children's fashion label and has worked with brands like Adidas and Stella McCartney. She had previously considered a career in dentistry before dedicating herself to supporting Messi's football journey.
