Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke died in May from the effects of heroin and cocaine, authorities announced Friday. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner determined the 29-year-old player's death was accidental.

Clarke was discovered deceased in a home near Los Angeles on May 11. A person with knowledge of the investigation told The Associated Press that drug paraphernalia was found at the residence. This individual spoke on the condition of anonymity as the details had not yet been publicly released.

Clarke was under contract with the Grizzlies through the 2026-27 season. Approximately six weeks prior to his death, he was arrested in Arkansas on charges including speeding, reckless driving, and possession of a controlled substance. He had played with Memphis for all seven of his professional seasons after concluding his college career at Gonzaga.
