Former NFL fullback Matt Suhey, a key offensive lineman for the legendary 1985 Chicago Bears team that won Super Bowl XX, died over the weekend from natural causes, according to officials.
Suhey, 68, was found dead at his home in Deerfield, Illinois, on Sunday. The Lake County Coroner’s Office stated that an initial police investigation revealed no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death. Chief Deputy Steve Newton of the coroner's office noted that Suhey had a significant medical history and was receiving treatment from a primary care physician, who will complete the death certificate.
Suhey played his entire 10-year NFL career with the Bears, joining the team in 1980. He spent the majority of his career blocking for Hall of Fame running back Walter Payton. During the 1985-86 championship season, Suhey contributed significantly to the Bears' Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots, rushing for 52 yards and a touchdown in the game.
Teammate and Family Tributes
News of Suhey's passing prompted tributes from former teammates and those close to him. Former safety Gary Fencik described Suhey as a "level-headed guy" and a "real valuable teammate," noting that his death came as a shock.
Jarrett Payton, son of Walter Payton, shared a heartfelt message on social media, calling Suhey his "dad’s closest friend" and a significant father figure after his father's death in 1999. Payton stated that Suhey "protected our family" and ensured they were cared for, fulfilling a responsibility entrusted to him by Walter Payton.
Over his NFL career, Suhey started 100 games. He accumulated 2,946 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns, along with 2,113 receiving yards and five receiving touchdowns.
