Mason Mount was substituted just 20 minutes into Manchester United's pre-season friendly against Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday, sparking initial concerns over the midfielder's fitness.

Mount appeared to be experiencing discomfort in his foot and was seen speaking with medical staff before leaving the pitch. However, manager Michael Carrick stated after the match that the substitution was a precautionary measure.

"He got kicked," Carrick said. "We just wanted to be careful and look after him. We’ve been lucky with injuries so far, so we wanted to be careful."

The 27-year-old midfielder has been a notable performer for United during their pre-season campaign. He joined the club from Chelsea in 2023 and has made 72 appearances across three seasons, though he has faced injury challenges during his tenure.

The friendly match, played in Gothenburg, ended in a 1-1 draw. PSG took an early lead through Ibrahim Mbaye, but Bryan Mbeumo equalized for United in the first half after being set up by Amad Diallo. Neither team managed to score in the second half.

Mount's status is a key consideration for United as they prepare for the upcoming season, which begins in two weeks. Their opening fixture is an away game against newly-promoted Hull City, followed by home matches against Ipswich and Everton, and a Manchester derby on September 13.
