Manchester United has officially completed the signing of Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba for a reported £70 million. The 22-year-old Cameroon international has agreed to a five-year contract at Old Trafford, with an option for a 12-month extension.
The transfer fee comprises an initial £65 million, with an additional £5 million contingent on add-ons. Brighton will also benefit from a sell-on clause as part of the agreement.
Baleba becomes Manchester United's third midfield acquisition of the summer, following previous signings Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, which collectively represent an £85 million investment. The club's director of football, Jason Wilcox, expressed delight at securing the midfielder, noting Baleba's potential and suitability for the squad.
"Carlos is an elite midfielder with immense potential to develop further," Wilcox stated. "He brings a unique combination of qualities that will really complement our squad. We are delighted to further strengthen our midfield with the addition of another established senior international with a proven track record of performing in the Premier League."
Baleba himself conveyed his excitement about joining the club. "It is an incredible feeling to join the club of my dreams," he said. "Playing at Old Trafford is always special but the opportunity to do so as a Manchester United player will be a real honour. I cannot wait to work with Michael Carrick; his experience and knowledge of the game make him the perfect coach to help me to reach the highest level. The ambition of everyone at the club is extremely clear, the future is hugely exciting, and I am determined to play my part in delivering the success that we are capable of together."
This signing comes in the wake of Manchester United's difficult opening match of the Premier League season, where they suffered a defeat to Hull City. First-half goals from Hull's Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy, both from set-pieces, put the team at a disadvantage.
Baleba is currently sidelined due to an ankle injury. His arrival is intended to address midfield needs, particularly following the departure of Casemiro as a free agent and the long-term knee injury sustained by Manuel Ugarte, which is expected to keep him out for a significant portion of the season.
