Manchester United has announced the outcome of its crackdown on ticket touts, revealing that 685 accounts have been banned for breaching season-ticket rules. This action comes ahead of a planned fan protest at Old Trafford before Sunday's derby match against Manchester City. The club stated that the operation, based on extensive data, has dismantled large-scale organized networks involved in ticket touting.
However, the crackdown has also generated frustration among some supporters. Fan organizers, The 1958, have stated that "a line has been crossed," accusing the club of issuing bans without clear evidence and potentially targeting innocent fans. Manchester United sources have denied these claims, asserting that 468 cases were resolved without further action and that some social media examples do not represent the full situation.
A club statement clarified that restrictions were removed when satisfactory explanations were provided. Many of these cases involved the sharing of account details and passwords, which violates the club's terms and conditions. The club acknowledged that supporters may have shared login details in what they considered legitimate circumstances and did not anticipate the extent of this practice. In instances without additional evidence of misuse, no sanctions were imposed.
The club maintains that this investigation will result in more tickets being available to genuine supporters, rather than being exploited by touts. Of the 685 banned accounts, 499 involved fans who lost an appeal, 73 had no appeal filed, and 113 did not respond to requests for information. Additionally, 464 supporters received reduced sanctions or final warnings.
The club's guiding principle in ticketing, according to the statement, is to ensure supporter safety, protect fair access for genuine fans, and combat ticket touting and misuse for financial gain. Bans were issued for significant misuse of the ticketing system, including the operation of organized networks controlling and distributing tickets from numerous accounts. The club plans to offer the season tickets released through this process to supporters on the season ticket waiting list and will issue refunds to the banned season ticket holders. Manchester United will wait until after the international break before reallocating these season tickets to allow sanctioned ticket holders an opportunity to refer their cases to the Independent Football Ombudsman. Any seats used on a match-by-match basis before then will be sold at season ticket prices.
