Luka Dončić is on a historic scoring tear to begin the NBA season, accumulating 308 points through his first eight games. This total is the most since Wilt Chamberlain's 418 points during the 1962-63 season, when Chamberlain averaged 44.8 points per game.
In the Mavericks' 116-103 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday, Dončić recorded 40 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, and one steal. This marked his fifth 40-point performance in his last six games.
Dončić is currently leading the league in scoring, averaging 38.5 points per game. The Mavericks stand second in the Western Conference with a 7-2 record.
Mavericks coach JJ Redick commented on Dončić's current streak, stating that it rivals his performance from March of the previous year. During March of last season, Dončić averaged 37.5 points, eight rebounds, and 7.4 assists, leading the Mavericks to a 15-2 record before suffering a torn hamstring that ended his season. Dončić is considered an early MVP candidate.
