Liverpool now possesses the most expensive football squad in the world, valued at an estimated £1.15 billion, according to the latest rankings from the CIES Football Observatory. This marks a shift from previous years, with the English club topping a list that was led by Chelsea in the prior season.
The Reds' significant investment includes recent high-profile acquisitions such as Bradley Barcola for £123 million from PSG, Victor Munoz for £35 million, and goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans for £30 million. These signings, combined with earlier deals for Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, contribute to the club's record-breaking squad expenditure.
English Premier League clubs feature prominently throughout the top rankings, reflecting the league's record-shattering spending this summer, which totaled £3.56 billion. Manchester City follows Liverpool in second place with a squad value of £1.04 billion. Tottenham Hotspur secured the third position, having spent £320 million on seven new players, including Sandro Tonali for £100 million, Savio for £85 million, and Mateus Fernandes for £85 million. The club also acquired Jan Paul van Hecke for £52 million.
Chelsea dropped to fourth place, while Manchester United and champions Arsenal ranked fifth and sixth, respectively. Manchester United's summer additions cost £163 million, a comparatively modest sum in recent years. Arsenal spent £194 million on new players like Ezri Konsa and Bruno Guimaraes.
Beyond the Premier League, Real Madrid is the highest-ranked non-English club, with a squad value of £876 million. Their major summer signing was Yan Diomande for £120 million. Paris Saint-Germain is positioned just below Real Madrid with a squad value of £785 million.
Newcastle United ranks ninth, having seen significant player departures, including Guimaraes and Tonali, but has since worked to rebuild its squad under new manager Matias Jaissle. Aston Villa is tenth, reinvesting funds from the sale of Morgan Rogers to Chelsea for £117 million. Bayern Munich is eleventh, with a total squad investment of £510 million, followed by Atletico Madrid and Juventus.
Brighton & Hove Albion, known for its transfer market acumen, has assembled a squad valued at £481 million, making them the only Premier League club with a positive net spend over the last ten transfer windows, with a surplus of £28 million. The report also notes the significant rise of Ipswich Town, which moved up 33 places to £366 million, and even the relegated West Ham United possesses a more expensively assembled squad than several European and Saudi Arabian clubs.
Rounding out the top 40, Frank Lampard's Coventry City has compiled a squad valued at £207 million, as they compete against the higher-spending Premier League sides.
