Lip readers believe they have uncovered the details of a viral video capturing a heated argument between a South African couple at a World Cup match. The video, which gained traction on social media, shows the pair waving flags before a dispute erupts as the man becomes engrossed in his phone.
Expert lip reader Nicola Hickling, in a partnership with Covers, has interpreted the exchange. According to Hickling, the woman accidentally struck a young boy next to her with her flag and began to apologize. She then noticed her partner looking at his phone, and he subsequently showed her its contents.
The man is quoted as saying, "There is nothing to see. The lads took pictures and sent them." The woman reportedly responded by asking, "Why are you looking?" to which the man replied, "I'm not looking at other women."
Their conversation continued, with the man stating, "Maybe this is why [I] don't mention things," before the woman retorted, "That's enough." The man's final remark, according to the lip reader, was "Shut up," met with her response, "I am sick of you always arguing."
The clip was initially posted on TikTok and subsequently spread across various social media platforms, prompting widespread speculation about the cause of the argument. Users on X (formerly Twitter) made various guesses, including accusations of infidelity or the man placing bets on the game. Some users also commented on the camera operator for continuing to film the couple.
