Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football, concluding a 20-year career with the Argentine national team.
The 39-year-old forward shared his decision on Monday, stating it was the "right time" to step away two days after Argentina's 1-0 defeat in the World Cup final against Spain on July 19. Messi cited the recent death of his father, Jorge, at the beginning of August as a factor that solidified his decision.
In a statement posted on Instagram, Messi expressed the emotional difficulty of his choice. "It was a decision that hurt, and still hurts, to my core," he wrote. "I swear that I always gave my all, not just in the last few years when we won everything, but before that too. I always fought and gave everything for this jersey, to bring you joy and make you proud to be Argentinian through football."
He acknowledged that his time with the national team was drawing to a close and that younger players are emerging. "There's not much time left, and chapters are closing, and this is one that hurts me deeply," Messi stated. "I love, loved, and will always love being on the National Team. I've given everything I have; I have nothing more to give, and besides, there are some great young players coming up behind me who deserve to be there."
Messi extended his gratitude to fans, family, coaches, teammates, and staff. "Thank you for all the love and support over these 20 years. I'm going to miss hearing you all from the inside so much. Now I'm going to be just one of you, cheering and supporting you from the sidelines (in good times and bad, even more so)," he said. He concluded his message with "Thank you, God, for making me Argentinian. Go Argentina!"
Messi’s international career began over two decades ago, and he has been a central figure for Argentina, leading them to numerous triumphs, including recent major tournament victories. His departure marks the end of an era for Argentine football.
