Aston Villa have completed the signing of midfielder Leon Goretzka on a free transfer, the club announced Wednesday. Goretzka joins Aston Villa after his departure from German giants Bayern Munich.
Arriving at Bayern Munich from Schalke in 2018, Goretzka was heralded as a versatile midfielder capable of playing various roles in the center of the park. His former coach at Bochum, Peter Neururer, once described him as a "once-in-a-century talent." During his tenure, Goretzka often operated as a deep-lying playmaker, frequently partnering Joshua Kimmich for both club and country. He also demonstrated the ability to play as an emergency center-back and an attacking number 10, where his goal-scoring prowess and aerial ability were highlighted.
These qualities led to him being selected by coaches even amidst strong competition in central midfield. For instance, Goretzka was a key figure in Germany's Nations League matches in March and June 2025, starting in Julian Nagelsmann's lineup. However, such spells where he was a prominent player became less frequent in recent years.
Injuries have been a recurring issue for Goretzka throughout his career, impacting his ability to reach his full potential in his twenties. While not typically suffering severe long-term injuries, he experienced consistent setbacks at inopportune times.
Despite a peak season in 2020-21, which saw Bayern win the Champions League, Goretzka missed the opening group stage game of the 2021 European Championships due to a hamstring issue. His only start in that tournament came against England in the round of 16.
When fit, Goretzka remained a regular starter for Bayern until the arrival of Vincent Kompany in 2024. He even managed to reclaim a starting spot after an initial period on the bench. Ultimately, the emergence of Bayern academy graduate Aleksandar Pavlovic contributed to Goretzka's departure from the club.
