The Philadelphia 76ers plan to utilize LeBron James as their primary point guard on offense, according to NBA insider Shams Charania.
Charania reported on NBA Today that James, 41, is expected to handle initiating the offense for coach Nick Nurse. This move comes after Tyrese Maxey, who played a significant on-ball role at point guard last season, demonstrated his scoring prowess off the ball.
"The Sixers, I'm told, are expecting LeBron James to play a good amount of time and period of time at the point guard position, on offense, initiating the game, the offense, for Nick Nurse," Charania stated.
This proposed role for James would allow him to leverage his renowned court vision and playmaking abilities. His history includes a successful stint as the primary facilitator for the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2019-20 season, where he averaged a career-high 10.2 assists per game. The Lakers went on to win the NBA Championship that season.
James signed a two-year, $8 million deal with the 76ers. His ability to play point guard addresses the team's previous lack of a dedicated floor general.
The addition of James to an already strong roster, which includes Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, adds another layer of veteran leadership and playmaking. His transition to the Eastern Conference and his role in running the offense are expected to be key factors for the 76ers in the upcoming season.
