LSU Tigers head coach Lane Kiffin acknowledged he strategically extended a weather delay before his team's season-opening game against Clemson, aiming to gain a competitive edge by forcing the opposing team to remain in uncomfortable locker room conditions.
The Tigers secured a decisive 51-10 victory over Clemson, amassing 644 total offensive yards in Kiffin's first game as LSU's head coach. The team's performance immediately positioned them as a College Football Playoff contender.
Before the game on September 5, 2026, a nearly two-hour weather delay, including a 90-minute warm-up period after lightning was detected within eight miles of Tiger Stadium, occurred. Officials reportedly offered Kiffin the chance to shorten the warm-up and start the game earlier. However, Kiffin admitted he declined the offer.
"That locker room sucks over there," Kiffin told reporters after the game, referring to the visiting team's facilities. "And when you sit in there, the longer you sit in there – No, it's a real thing."
Kiffin further explained his competitive mindset. "If you haven't figured out my competitiveness in order to win, if I'm gonna go through all that other stuff for two players, nationally, I'm certainly gonna," he said. "If I think 90 minutes is gonna help us win the game, we're gonna sit in the locker room for 90 minutes."
The head coach indicated that this approach reflects his overall strategy of seeking every possible advantage, from roster construction to in-game management. While he conceded the delay itself was not the primary reason for LSU's overwhelming victory, it exemplifies the mentality he has brought to Baton Rouge.
In the game, LSU's offense, led by new quarterback Sam Leavitt, gained 309 rushing yards on 58 attempts. The defense was equally dominant, allowing only 40 rushing yards on 26 attempts and limiting Clemson to 3.0 yards per play. The Tigers' defense recorded 10 tackles for loss and four sacks.
LSU is scheduled to play Louisiana Tech next, followed by an away game against Ole Miss on September 19, where Kiffin will face his former colleague Pete Golding.
