Madison Square Garden buzzed with an unusual energy Saturday night as New York Knicks stars Karl-Anthony Towns and Jalen Brunson stepped into the wrestling ring during WWE's Saturday Night's Main Event. The appearances intertwined the championship-contending NBA team with the professional wrestling spectacle.
Towns, a key player for the Knicks, provided backup for WWE performer Danhausen in a no-disqualification match against JD McDonagh. Towns entered the ring and delivered a chokeslam to McDonagh, followed by another chokeslam that sent Mysterio through a table, eliciting a roar from the New York City crowd.
NBA Finals MVP Jalen Brunson also made a notable appearance, standing in the corner of World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns. Brunson, a self-proclaimed WWE enthusiast, was presented with a custom Knicks World Heavyweight Championship belt and received a standing ovation.
However, the night took an unexpected turn when Seth Rollins' music played. Instead of Reigns' SummerSlam challenger, Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton emerged with a chair. This distraction allowed Rollins to attack Reigns. Brunson intervened as Rollins prepared to use the chair, leading to chants of "MVP" from the audience as the show concluded.
Brunson has previously shared his admiration for WWE, noting that he and a trainer acknowledge Roman Reigns before games. The crossover event successfully integrated the Knicks' star power into the WWE narrative, providing hometown support for some of wrestling's popular figures.
