Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Kirk Cousins recently drew attention for a unique touchdown celebration that paid homage to the team's training staff and their focus on soft-tissue maintenance.
During a game against the New York Jets on Sunday, Cousins scored a touchdown on a quarterback sneak. Instead of a conventional celebration, he performed what he later described as his "wellness celebration." Cousins explained that the Raiders have invested significantly in their training staff, providing a level of care that he deeply appreciates, especially at his age.
"We do a lot of tissue work here, and at my age, it’s especially helpful," Cousins said. "I tell the guys, ‘Look, I’ve played elsewhere. This is a luxury. This is a blessing. We didn’t have this other places.'"
Cousins revealed he had a pre-planned intention to acknowledge the staff if he ever scored a rushing touchdown. "I said, someday, if I run for a touchdown, I’m going to give a shoutout to all the staff who work so hard to help us feel good and be one of the healthier teams in the league,” he stated.
However, Cousins momentarily forgot his plan as he jogged off the field. Fortunately, tight end Brock Bowers reminded him. "I’m jogging off the field and Brock, who doesn’t say much, goes, ‘Hit them with the wellness celebration,'" Cousins recounted. "I said, ‘What?’ He goes, ‘Hit them with the wellness.' So, I stood there, looked right at him and did the elbow."
The celebration, along with Cousins' explanation, quickly gained traction online, with many finding humor in the unconventional tribute. Despite a perceived reputation for corniness, Cousins embraced the moment, highlighting the positive impact of the Raiders' commitment to player well-being.
