The New York Mets have begun building their roster for the upcoming season, announcing Monday the signing of Christian Cairo to a one-year major league contract. Cairo, who spent the majority of the previous season with the Triple-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies, adds infield depth to the Mets.

Last season, the 25-year-old Cairo posted a .280 batting average, a .381 on-base percentage, and a .300 slugging percentage over 130 games. He recorded four home runs, 36 RBIs, and 25 stolen bases. After being acquired by the Mets, he played his final two games of the season with Triple-A Syracuse.

Cairo, a native of Clearwater, Florida, was originally selected by Cleveland in the fourth round of the 2019 MLB draft.
